Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) is an intravenous infusion which may include carbohydrates, fat, protein, minerals, vitamins, electrolytes, and trace elements. Additional medications can be added to the TPN bag to help with different conditions like nausea, vomiting, reflux, and diarrhea.
TPN is a method of feeding used when you cannot eat or absorb enough food through the digestive system. It is infused directly into the blood stream usually through a PICC line or Porta-Cath using a small portable infusion pump.

TPN can be used for various conditions either on a short term or long term basis. Labs are usually monitored on a weekly basis and the TPN formula is adjusted accordingly.
